How to prevent ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairsIngrown hairs, also known as Folliculitis, can occur anywhere on the body where hair is present. Ingrown Hairs are the result of hairs growing and finding the path of least recistence, which in this case, is underneath the surface of the skin. This leads to spots and in rare cases, infection. Leaving Ingrown Hairs untreated can be dangerous, not to mention unsightly. We've enlisted the help of our resident grooming guru, Steven O'Neill and asked him to share his 'Ingrown Hairs Words-of-Wisdom' with us. Here's what he has to say.

Ah, this old chestnut. Well firstly, I don't believe any man who walks this land has escaped the occurrence of an ingrown hair. We tend to experience ingrown hairs on the parts of our faces which we shave regularly. There are a few reasons for this;

1. Because we chop the hair so closely to the skin, sometimes this leads to the hair retracting back below the surface level and aiding access to a path of growth it wouldn't normally have entry to.

2. We chaps aren't all that good at using a face scrub very often. This lack of use causes a build up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin which the hairs then 'hit' and re-direct themselves around; most commonly back into the skin. The hair will then continue to grow until it finds a way out.

The best way to free yourself from this bitter issue is to build a few essential items into your grooming routine. Namely, a face scrub, and a post shave astringent. Using both will defend your face against the enemy and keep you rash and breakout free.

Step 1: Before shaving, wet the growth and gently massage your face scrub into the hairs. Continue with this for at least 60 seconds. Rinse. My most recommended face scrub; NuBo Bio-Electric Buff.

Step 2: Apply your shaving product and, well, shave. My most recommended shave product? Karin Herzog Shave Oil. Once you've tried it you won't use anything else.

Step 3: Wet your hands with cold water and 'swipe' them over the area you've just shaven. This will remove excess hairs and product but will leave any essential reparitive ingredients from your shave formula behind.

Step 4: Apply a strong astringent to the face and neck area to close the pores, destroy bacteria and essentially prevent the onset of a shave rash. My most recommended has to be Anthony Logistics Ingrown Hair Treatment. One word: Amazing!

There we have it. A fool-proof guide to freeing you of ingrown hairs.
