How To Tackle Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs, also known as Folliculitus, are the most common male grooming issue. To help you tackle unruly hairs head-on, we've compiled a guide on how to prevent and treat hairs which grow beneath the surface of the skin.

What Causes Hairs To Grow Beneath The Skin?

There are number of reasons why your hairs may become ingrown. The most common reason being dead skin cells preventing the hairs from protruding out of the follicle, the other is the direction in which the hairs naturally grow.

Dead skin cells are easily treated and prevented by using a face scrub 2-3 times per week, and preferably before shaving. This will lift the dead skin from the face allowing the hairs to grow freely and remove any risk of them becoming trapped.

The direction in which your hair grows is slightly more tricky to manage, largely because you can't really do much about it. What you can do, however, is be tactical with your shaving practices and encourage the hairs to grow outwards. Try shaving every second day; this will give the hairs a chance to grow to a minimal length that peeks out into the open air and allows your razor better access to cut them. If you shave daily then your hairs are more likely to never surface, and as such, they begin to grow under the superficial layers of the skin.

Next, identify areas of your beard that grow in varying directions; usually under the chin and on the neck. Adjust the direction of your razor to ensure that your blade is able to cut the hairs as close as possible. The chin and neck are fairly robust areas to shave so they can usually handle your blade chopping against the grain.

For some, ingrown hairs will pop up regardless of what you do. If your find yourself stiff suffering from problem hairs try one of our handpicked ingrown formulas to help tackle, treat and terminate the issue.
