How To Stop Your Beard From Itching
With the trend for bushy beards continuing to gather pace, we're often asked how to stop the beard from itching and causing discomfort. To assist in your crusade for the perfect, pain-free beard, we've enlisted the help of our resident male grooming expert, Graham Matthews and asked him for his top tips for keeping your beard itch-free and in good order.
When it comes to growing the perfect beard, there's no right or wrong approach. A beard is a truly personal, individual project, you have to nurture it and tame is as it grows.
Week One
Use your face scrub daily to keep the skin in perfect condition and to keep the hairs standing on end. This will prevent the hairs from becoming ingrown and irritating the face.
Invest in a beard comb and comb the beard twice daily to keep the growth tangle-free.
Week Two
Depending on how fast your beard grows, you should now start to see generous coverage on the face. Keep it clean and conditioned in order to prevent it from becoming too coarse and itchy. Apply a beard oil twice daily. This will soften the hair and keep the skin beneath your beard hydrated and nourished. To apply your beard oil, simply rub a small amount of the oil between the palms of the hands and stroke it through the growth, starting from the neck working upwards.
Week Three
Identify areas where your beard grows quickest and start to trim them. You can use electric clippers of barber style scissors, for best results, always trim your beard using your beard comb.
Start to comb your beard and train it to grow in the desired direction. Hair can grow fairly wild on the face, in all sorts of directions, so be sure to get a grip of taming and training - failure to do this may result in you having to trim your beard right back and start again from scratch.
Week Four
For most guys, four weeks of continuous growth will result in a healthy, full-bodied beard. It also means four weeks of training yourself how to manage it.
At this point, ensure that your sideburns are kept trimmed, your nose hair isn't starting to contribute to your beard and your upper lip is kept clear of any trace of a fringe!
Top Beard Growing Tips
Invest in a beard comb. The best one I have tried is Baxter of California Beard Comb.
Find an intensive beard oil to condition your beard. I recommend Carsons Apothecary Facial Hair Conditioner, in particular, the Arabian Pomegranate version.
Trim the hair above your upper lip regularly to ensure that your mouth is kept clear of growth. Keep your beard clean and in good order.
If your beard continues to cause discomfort and is still itching, try using a shave cream as a 'Beard Mask' once weekly to really soften and nourish the growth. I recommend Urth Skin Solutions for Men Shave Formula, it's packed with Glycerin and Essential Oils so it offers the perfect intensive treatment. The essential oils also help to defend against bacteria.
